Why do we love Quepos fly fishing? Let us count the ways. 1) plenty of fish offshore and 2) fair seas but the best thing is 3) the return of many of our avid fly fishing anglers. This week we had the pleasure of fishing with Corbett Davis, a longtime friend and returning fly fisherman, joined by his wife Dee Dee and their friends Katie and Carl Hiaasen. Squeeze Me and Bad Monkey – yes, that’s the one – also an avid fly fisherman. On day 1 the two couples fished together using conventional tackle so the ladies could have some fun too. We switched to fly fishing for the later part of the day. The boat saw 10 sailfish come into the spread but there was also a lot of bait around so the sailfish were not hungry. Out of 10, we only had two bites and thankfully caught and released one on the fly rod and one on conventional. They caught 2 nice sized dorado on conventional. On day 2 the focus was on fly fishing with only Corbett and Carl at the ready with their saltwater fly rods. Unfortunately it was a slow day for billfish and only 6 sailfish were raised, again likely due to the enormous amount of bait in the area. Still they caught and released 2 sailfish and 1 dorado on the fly rod. Total tally for the two day charter was: 16 Sailfish raised, 6 bites, 1 released on conventional and 3 released on the fly. 8 Dorado raised, caught and released 1 on the fly and 7 on conventional. The anglers were very pleased with the full experience commenting that “Captain Junior and Diego were fantastic, the most talented fishing crew experienced, with knowledge of boat handling, rigging and knowledge of the waters they were fishing in, both days were magical.”
